Plastic Free July – Part Two

Why it’s important to reduce your plastic consumption

Avoiding unnecessary plastic is, quite frankly, tricky.

But because most of what we buy is packaged in plastic, it’s important to think about ways to reduce plastic waste, and what better time to do this than during Plastic Free July.

Every year, we extract billions of tonnes of resources from the Earth, resources that are finite. While some of those resources can take centuries to replenish, the products manufactured from them are often disposed of within minutes.

Every purchase you make, whether that’s stocking up on non-recyclable home comforts or consciously choosing brands that offer a recycling solution, is a vote for the future you want to live in.

If there’s something you simply can’t live without, like a capsule espresso maker, consider choosing a brand that takes sustainability seriously.

While you’re at it, why not check out the recycling programs TerraCycle offers for these waste streams and see how easy it is to responsibly dispose of many products you imagined weren’t recyclable.

Reducing plastic consumption will also help the earth at the other end of the process: easing the burden on our increasingly strained landfill operations. The rise in use of disposable items like plastic gloves and face masks will result in more plastic heading to landfill. We need to reduce what we can to avoid clogging up more of our landfills and waterways.

At times of confusion, it can be easy to revert to bad habits, to stockpile disposable products and to forget about our environmental priorities.

But remember the planet needs us, and that now, more than ever, we need the planet.
