A guest post from our friends at Keep Australia Beautiful
This year, the iconic Keep Australia Beautiful Week is being held from 17 to 23 August. In its 48th year, the event raises awareness about the simple things all Australians can do in their daily lives to reduce their impact on the environment and encourage action.
The unprecedented events of 2020 mean that Keep Australia Beautiful is taking a different approach to KAB Week, that is why this year the theme is “Litter: Prevent the Spread”.
Protecting ourselves from the spread of COVID-19 has led to drastic changes to the way we live – from staying at home more to increasing our hygiene practices.
However, there are some unintended consequences of this new lifestyle, especially when it comes to the waste we are producing. Items like single-use food and beverage containers, face masks, hand sanitizer and gloves are in high demand. All with the potential to end up as litter in our beautiful country.

The good news is, Keep Australia Beautiful believes that we can all work towards a litter-free Australia from the comfort of our homes with some simple tips to prevent rubbish ending up in the environment. Throughout KAB Week, Keep Australia Beautiful will be sharing daily recycling and waste tips for some of the common items we are using more frequently to prevent spreading the virus. But they need your support to help spread the word!

How to participate
Keep Australia Beautiful Week 2020 will focus on the three main ways we can reduce and recycle some of the goods we are using more of these days:
- How to protect you and your loved ones without the cost to our planet
- How to keep good hygiene practices that don’t cost the Earth
- How to reduce and recycle the single-use consumables from takeaway food and drinks.
